tapping\knocking rear left + other issues
Quote from Liz Haynes on March 31, 2023, 7:05 amHi everyone,
I have a 22 plate Sport. I bought it with 1500 miles 5 months ago and now has about 4500 on the clock. I have been enjoying speeding about and the car looks well - red with black roof but I have now hit a few problems.
There is a tapping/knocking sound when I travel over uneven ground and speed bumps coming from rear left. It is getting more noticeable and I am now fairly obsessed with it! I have had the seats down, seat belts clipped in, the parcel shelf out etc.
I took it to dealer where I bought it (Sims Darlington). It needed servicing as it is now 12 months old and was told the front left wheel bearing and the rear brake discs needed replacing. I was gobsmacked. Initially the dealer was acting as if this was just a normal occurrence and I was stressing over nothing. Anyway got done under warranty and finally admitted that it was unusual for these parts to fail at 4500.
Of course, could find no reason for knocking/tapping. I travel up a tarmac track everyday which is pretty uneven so have plenty of opportunities to hear it.
So - what do think about having parts replaced so soon - has that happened to you? Have I bought a 'friday' car?
And any ideas for the knock?
This hassle has taken the shine off owning this car which is the newest car I have ever bought!

Quote from Skomaz on March 31, 2023, 9:25 pmRe the nocking as I mentioned on another post... Have you checked the ARB droplinks?
They can sound as you describe and sometimes it's hard to tell whether the noise from them is coming from the front or the back.
As to parts, I know I only have a non sport SZ5 but it's been spot on and the only things I've replaced at 27k miles is front disks and pads and two front tyres. Everything else is solid.

Quote from Lachlan Lynch on September 16, 2023, 11:00 amHi liz, iv just bought a 22 swift sport too 5000 miles on clock now. Iv also got the same knock sound that you’ve described in the same place, near side rear. Did you manage to find out what was causing it? I work as a mechanic at a Toyota garage right next to the Suzuki dealer I bought the car from. Gonna look at getting it booked in asap as I can’t fiddle with it as I’ll invalidate the warranty. Also are you having water ingress that sits on the inside of the door after a rainy day, let me know.

Quote from Liz Haynes on September 17, 2023, 9:05 amThat's interesting! I have had a right carry on with my car. For months the only response I had was: Suzuki is the most reliable car bla bla. My problem turned out to be front left. It's been repaired twice. I think they replaced the strut. First time knocking stopped for a week and then started again. Second time I'm not sure what they did differently but has worked except for I now I think I have the beginnings of a tap/knock developing front right. It has taken months to get sorted and I had to take the manager of the dealership out for ride and drive over speed humps. As you have expertise in this area, I will be interested to hear how you get on. I do like the car - it's loads of fun but this knocking has really got under my skin.

Quote from Joe Randall on December 1, 2023, 4:30 pmHey Liz,
Did this issue get sorted? I’ve got the exact same problem on a 72 plate SSS. Funnily enough, my local garage is also Sims, so if you’ve had a solution it’ll save me a headache trying to replicate the sound for them. Thanks in advance!

Quote from Lachlan Lynch on December 6, 2023, 8:10 amHi liz again, just wondering if your dealer did find the knocking noise, mine still hasn't been able too. Apparently the area guy who comes out to listen to odd noises is meant to be coming round in January to drive my car and listen himself. Hopefully he knows what's going on. The only thing i can possibly think it could be now is the springs being just wrong from the factory as they are meant to be stiffer from factory compared to a standard swift. have you tried driving around with your boot lid open as i did. i thought it could be the boot lid making the noise and when i was driving around with it fully open i couldnt hear the knocking noise anymore but im not jumping to any conclusions yet as it was quite hard to hear anything if im honest.
Also to note is that their was a swift in the garage next door for the same knocking noise as mine, it had a whole new rear suspension, new coil springs, shockers and rear axle with bushes but still made the noise. Also joe, how long have you had sss, and what mileage is it at? Mines just over 7000 now and iv had the knock since 4500 when i bought the car.

Quote from Joe Randall on December 6, 2023, 10:46 amInteresting - I’m taking mine in later today and will let you know what’s going on. I had a 2018 SSS from brand new and it never made this noise in 4 years of owning. I then got this one brand new in Nov 2022 and it’s always made this noise (which I figured was the locking wheel nut in the boot - but it still does it with nothing but me in the car). I’ve now done about 6500 miles in it, so I wonder if this is genuinely an issue for these cars.

Quote from Liz Haynes on December 6, 2023, 12:07 pmHi guys,
Sorry for delay in replying. My car was repaired twice. The first time it stopped the knock for about a day and then it started again - can't remember what they did that time. Second time I think they replaced the strut and that has sorted it on the left but now it has started on the driver's side. I know that sound so well! I'm now on 11,000 miles and the tap/knock is very intermittent so am going to leave it for now. If it is the same as the original problem it will get more frequent until it makes a noise on country lanes and not just speed bumps and uneven surfaces. I live on a farm and drive up a bumpy track so have plenty of opportunity to hear it.
I had an issue making Sims take this seriously. Had a feeling they thought I was being neurotic! I wasn't neurotic I was furious. I had bought the car with 1500 miles on and knocking started at around 4500. In the end I had to go out for a drive with the manager for him to hear it. Then things got moving and he was helpful. I'll drop them an email and get more detail on what was replaced - that might help you.Liz

Quote from Lachlan Lynch on December 6, 2023, 5:07 pmCheers liz anymore info would be great, my main annoyance with the car is the rear knocking, going over speed bumps or coming out of a junction, however i get the same noise from the front now both sides. I had a new shock absorber fitted on the drivers front as i also had to go on road test with the manager as i wasn't taken seriously either till the noises happened with me and him in the car. So it had a new shocker fitted on the front on Monday 4th of December however it still makes the same knock on the front lmao and then like i said before im waiting till January for the area guy to come out and road test the car to determine what the rear noise is. Ill this thread updated if i come up with any new developments. But a strange thing is that while my car was in the workshop i had a brand new 73 plate sss with only 53 miles on it and that made the exact same knocking as mine does and by the sounds of it yours and joes so it could be a characteristic of the model or theirs possibly a select few sss that have come out the factory with this problem but again ill keep this updated with the developments im able to find. Its a real shame because i genuinely love my sss, its great but not knowing what's making these noises is driving me insane.

Quote from Joe Randall on January 11, 2024, 1:36 pmWe definitely all have the same issue. My dealer couldn’t find anything wrong or replicate the issue when I took it in, but it’s very noticeable to me having now monitored it for the last month. Have either of you had any progress?
